The Look – Mark 10

Scripture:  Mark 10:20 – 21

“Teacher,” he declared, “all these I have kept since I was a boy.” Jesus looked at him and loved him. “One thing you lack,” he said. “Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

Observation:

Jesus knew that the man followed the law with his external actions but didn’t have inner obedience.  But, Jesus treats the man with compassion when he tells him what he should do.

Application:

We don’t have the benefit of Jesus walking with us physically on Earth, so the thought of Jesus looking at me with love just takes my breath away.  So how does Jesus look at me with love when He’s not physically here?  There have been times when He has done this with the hug of a family member, with the encouraging words of friends or a sermon from the pastor.  But, this time I felt that loving, comforting gaze upon me when I read the words in my Bible.

I had a couple of tough days right before I read Mark 10.  So many of the words spoke to me with new meaning and some old favorites reached out to me as well.  But, the Spirit led me to just the words I needed to hear – Jesus looks at me and loves me.  As I let those words tumble over me, I could feel the tension of the last few days melt away.  The peace that came over my was like a warm blanket on a cold winter’s day.

Prayer:

Jesus, You are such a loving Savior and I praise You with all my heart. Forgive me for those time I’ve tried to follow You with my external actions without having inner obedience.  Thank you for looking at me in my sinful state and loving me. Please help me to look at others the way You do.
